This is a colorful and expressive Vintage Old Modern Abstract Nautical Seascape Oil Painting on canvas, by acclaimed Swiss-born Mid Century New York Modernist painter, Jean Nerfin (1922 – 2018.) This artwork depicts an abstracted seascape scene, with a pale pink, powder blue, and deep yellow sky, various obscure buildings can be seen on the shoreline, and spider like black sailboats are visible lulling in the calm waters. Signed and dated in the lower right corner:”Nerfin ’77.” Approximately 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 18 x 24 inches. Good – Fair condition for decades of age and storage, with mild and scattered speckles of paint loss, light craquelure, faint soiling in the lower right corner, and a few tiny pinholes tears along the edges (please see photos carefully. Additionally, the original period vintage wood frame has mild scuffing and edge wear. Nerfin’s seascape scenes are his most popular and command the highest prices at auction. About the Artist: Jean Nerfin Born: 1922 Jean Nerfin (Born 1922) is active/lives in Canada. Jean E. Nerfin (1922-2018)Jean E. Nerfin was born in Switzerland in 1922. After serving in the military during WWII, Nerfin worked in London and Paris. It was here that he was able to absorb the sophisticated art scene of the 1940s. In 1951, he opened his own commercial design firm in New York where he associated with other famous artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Jean Nerfin is a Swiss artist, is known for his colorful oil paintings depicting various landscapes. Born in Aubonne, Switzerland in 1922, Nerfin grew up in an apartment above the family textile business. He served in the military during World War II before moving to Paris in the 40s. It was here that his affinity for the arts blossomed, absorbing the sophisticated art scene the city had to offer. Soon after, he travelled throughout Africa before moving to the United States, where, in 1951, he opened a commercial design firm in New York. He worked on window displays for large department stores by day, while honing his painting by night. It was during this time he began to associate with world-famous artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. In 1975, he was finally able to dedicate himself full time to his painting and moved across the country to open a studio in Santa Barbara, California. He would continue to work on his own paintings while collaborating on magazine covers and private commissions. Nerfin’s painting technique was unique, one that most resembled works by famous Post-Impressionist painters, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Henri-Edmond Cross, Robert Antoine Pinchon, Maximilien Luce, and Paul Signac. Nerfin seemed to blend components of Pointillism, Fauvism, and Post-Impressionism to create his own unique, signature style. He passed away from natural causes in Geneva in 2018 at age 95.
