eBay Woven Hair Jewelry Brooch with dangles and bulbs This intricate hair jewelry piece is a Double Infinity Knot brooch with 3 bulbs and 2 leaf dangles. This is a very lovely example of a Hair Jewelry Brooch that is in excellent condition! My late husband purchased it for me about 25-30 years ago, and it is a treasure that I have loved and appreciated for its beauty. He bought several hair jewelry pieces for me over the years that we were married and I am now selling these pieces so that someone else can enjoy them as much as I have. Check my other listings if interested. An expert hair jewelry collector has evaluated this brooch and provided me with a detailed description below. “In this Double Infinity Knot brooch there is some white hair mixed in with the dark brown hair. This is a very natural change of hair color and many workers of hair jewelry used to remove them to make the finished piece more uniform and graceful. Due to the different colors of hair in the weave, this is highly sought after by collectors. The pattern for the hollow form, open weave, double loops, 3 hollow formed, open weave bulbs and 2 hollow form open weave leaf dangles is the same pattern and uses the same hair for all of the pieces. This is made by braiding the hair around a shaping core called a ‘soul’. When the braid is completed, the hair is boiled then quickly dried so the hair keeps the shape. The shaping core/ soul is removed, and the ends trimmed. The work is then set into a piece of jewelry. This brooch is fitted with 14 K gold. The etchings on the ends of the bar brooch are in good condition and the leaves are also in good condition, adding a nice touch to the piece. The caps on the bottoms of the bulbs are intact and matching as well as the dangles and their caps. These infinity knot bar brooches were very common and the more you added to them by accents, dangles, more loops, bows, bulbs, and other pieces make the piece worth more. The leaf dangles on the bottom of this piece are not a standard shape and will interest a collector to obtain this piece for the rarity of the shape. The pattern for this brooch is one of 4 patterns and they are right next to each other in Mark Campbell’s book, ‘Self-Instructor in the Art of Hair Work, Dressing Hair, Making Curls, Switches, Braids, and Hair Jewelry of Every Description’ written in 1867. This is either one of the 2 ‘open fine braids’, the ‘open lace braid’, or the’ open braid’. They are patterns number 85,86,87,88th from the front in Mark Campbell’s book. This piece is consistent with pieces we see from Circa 1840-1910. The brooch weighs 4grams, in 14K gold. Considering that the weight of the hair is minimal, most of the weight is gold.
