A charming Book Of Trades with verses by Lucas and featuring full-page color illustrations (one for each profession) by Bedford, engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. Meigs calls this “another book ahead of its time”. Francis Donkin Bedford (1864–1954), also known as F. D. Bedford, was a British artist and illustrator. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, Bedford illustrated his first books including A Book of Nursery Rhymes (1897), The Books of Shops (1899), Four and Twenty Toilers (1900), and The Visit to London (1902). Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
