In modern BMW automobile engines, a special DISA unit is used, which is mounted on the intake manifold. It is a vacuum mechanism controlled by a solenoid valve that responds to signals from the motor ECU. And this unit breaks down pretty quickly. DISA is based on a split piping layout. Let’s try to explain what this means. So. What is a DISA block for? To regulate the flow of air entering the motor, it is redirected through pipelines of different lengths and widths. For this, a special damper is used in accordance with the current operating mode of the motor, which closes some pipelines and opens others. It, together with the mechanism that controls its position, is the DISA BMW “block”. The meaning of the functioning of this unit is to instantly redirect the air flow through pipelines with different sections and lengths. This adjusts the characteristics of the air flow directed to the motor. When the motor is running at high speeds, air is directed through wide, short pipelines, while at low and medium speeds, air is directed through long, narrow pipelines. This ensures a constant torque value in any operating mode of the motor. Problems with the “DISA” block and solutions During operation, the disa e83 machine (on this brand, and on others with similar motors) fails. This happens gradually, the reason is in the compound and the material (plastic). The connection of the blade and the lever is such that it gradually looses out, the rigidity of the connection between the parts is lost and a situation arises when the blade dangles chaotically, making specific sounds: buzzing and even crackling. When this happens, it is recommended that you stop using the vehicle and start repairing it. Otherwise, the blade will come off completely, which will lead to serious damage to the motor. But removing the dis n52 and replacing the worn out block with a new one will solve the problem for a short time. The plastic in it is the same and the connection to the lever is exactly the same.
