Nowhere in the world did they teach the poster purposefully and systematically, as it was in the USSR.Rare Soviet posters today have to be searched for in different countries of the world. It’s a paradox, but what was created in only a few copies and is known only to collectors is sometimes easier to find than what was produced in thousands of copies. Of the millions of campaign posters that have adorned the streets, classrooms, classrooms and hospital corridors for many decades, only a few have survived.Posters of the Soviet era are not only original works of graphic art, antiques and antique graphics, original retro gifts and interior items, but also truly historical documents. Now there is a plaque…If 20 years ago you would have asked one of the Kyiv artists “Do you know Mohor?”, then everyone would immediately say “Is this the one who lives in Boyarka? Posterist? Who doesn’t know him!Artist Yuri Pavlovich Mokhor, a famous Ukrainian Soviet poster artist, lived in Boyarka for many years, from the 70s of the last century, in a house on Mira Street, which he built himself. Now there is a plaque…His name is known not only in Ukraine and the countries of the former USSR, but, without exaggeration, all over the world. Because Mohor is one of those who are related to the phenomenon of the Soviet poster. Of course, the artist created landscapes, portraits, still lifes, worked in oils and watercolors, but is still best known as a poster artist. In collaboration with the artist Oleg Terentiev, he created about 200 posters.The artist’s work cannot be considered in isolation from the era and the country in which he lived and worked. This is a Soviet poster, this is that life. It may not be possible for a modern young person to understand this, but it is possible and necessary to try to understand it.Irina Veshtak-Ostromenskaya wrote beautifully about the phenomenon of the Soviet poster (Poster Territory, Gallery magazine, 2000, No. 3-4, pp. 26-27). Here is an excerpt from her article.“… But the poster (more precisely, the phenomenon of the socialist poster) is interesting if only because it was the most massive exit of artists to the people for the entire time of the existence of world art. The political conditions that contributed to this are understandable and do not require explanation, but this is a fact that cannot be brushed aside. Posters were published in circulation from 5 to 50 thousand, there were cases and 100 thousand copies, the cost is cheap. And in every possible way they spread to walls, stands, advertising bollards and fences, posters in a reduced size dispersed around the country on postcards, magazine covers. Posters are published by Politizdat of Ukraine, Mystetstvo, Agitplakat, Kinoplakat, theaters and circuses, all kinds of societies: Monument Protection, Red Cross, etc. and so on. – the purpose of these posters, as before, is no different from the popular “Windows of ROSTA”, not only to say in words, to print in letters, but to show a specific intelligible picture. Only Mokhor and Terentiev (according to the bibliographic guide of the Book Chamber of the Ukrainian SSR-66) printed 167 posters from 1956 to 1966. Now the ideological bias of the poster is still frightening, but this fear is washed away by time, and only a graphic sheet remains, in which the plastic style of the moment, the talent or inability of the creator is preserved. These material testimonies of history were made by artists, which means not only with their hands, but also with their souls. In general, artists do not know how to do otherwise – otherwise nothing happens … “But back to the biography of the artist. Unfortunately, with the collapse of the Union, it became difficult to find information from the archive of the Union of Artists, but something was found.Yuriy Mokhor was born on March 20, 1922 in Kiev. In 1955 he graduated from the Kiev State Art Institute, the studio of the People’s Artist of the USSR Vasily Ilyich Kasiyan. Laureate of the Prize. Kasiyana (his teacher) – the republican award in the field of fine arts in the section “Political poster”. Member of the Great Patriotic War.
