Here we have a pair of early 1960s Jensen Model M80 Alnico closed-back mid-range speakers. These were commonly used in Jensen three-way systems, from the smaller slimline designs to the larger Imperial systems. Jensen, a pioneering company in dynamic cone speakers, leveraged their expertise to produce impressive full-range speaker systems utilizing all cone drivers whenever possible. These particular speakers date back to the early 1960s, a period when Jensen experimented with a unique celluloid coated cone material, a hard coating similar to the material used in ping pong balls. This, combined with the closed-back magnet assembly, allows these speakers to be finely tuned for precise mid-range reproduction. They were typically paired with 12- and 15-inch Flexair woofers and often with Sonodome tweeters, though they were also used alongside various Jensen horn drivers, even in their large Imperial systems. The speakers were impedance frequency swept and measured a nicely matched 5 ohms impedance with a free air response of 800 Hz for both. Test reports are included with both speakers. The cones are in very nice condition, with only some areas of dusty discoloration, but no tears are visible. The backside retains its original 1960s brown-tan lacquer finish. If you’re considering experimenting with tube-friendly three-way setups, these 8-inch specialty mid-range transducers can add powerful detail and presence to your system. Given their low cost and high-quality Alnico build, they are certainly worth exploring.
