eBay Uncommon Nikon F3AF w/80mm F2.8 AF lens & CF24 case Up for bids is this lightly used Nikon F3AF camera system. Anyone that knows cameras knows that the Nikon F3 was the staple body in almost every pro photographer’s arsenal from its debut in 1980 until the mid 90’s when the F4 finally made enough of a stronghold in the autfocus arena to encourage enought pros to make the switch The F3 abandoned the earlier mechanically operated shutter of the F2 for a modern, electronically-controlled, horizontally-traveled metal curtain design. The new shutter proved to be equally reliable and less maintenance-intensive overall. The F3 continued the high-quality of its predecessors, in some ways surpassing it. Only the finest quality mechanical and electronic parts were selected. The F3 utilizes ball-bearings to mount its shutter and film transport mechanisms, and additional clusters of bearings for the film advance make one of the smoothest operating cameras ever built. In fact, resistance is so low when operating the film advance that it is difficult to tell if there is film in the camera. After topping the professional camera market, the F3 design went one step further and produced an autofocus version. The F3AF was launched in April, 1983 amidst rising pressure to create an AF SLR. Being a professionally orientated camera, the F3AF is a landmark camera from Nikon. It was also among the first SLRs (if not the first) to have an AF system that was based on TTL contrast detection. The F3AF was launched together with two AF Nikkor lenses, both the AF 80mm f/2.8 and AF 200mm f3.5 ED-IF. Naturally, the F mount was retained so that the progression to AF lenses would not hamper the use of older Nikkor lenses on the F3AF. As an interesting technological note; the AF Nikkor lenses made for this camera have their driving motors in the lens and not in the body. They are in a sense, the predecessors to the current AF-S series lenses. These first* generation AF Nikkor lenses also predate the electronic EF series lenses for the Canon EOS based SLR cameras, by 5 years. Unlike most other members of the F3 family of cameras, the F3AF does differ in its construction, despite being very similar to the other F3 series cameras. The main difference being a set of contacts that exist in the pentaprism area and the lens mount. The F3AF also has a very unique pentaprism, the AF Finder DX-1. The F3AF is the only F3 series camera that has a viewfinder area that is less than 100% (approx. 92% coverage with the DX-1) As you can tell from the photos, this body is in nice cosmetic condition with light use. Clean battery compartment. As grading is very subjective, I took photos of all angles to give you a clear picture in which to make your own grading assessment. The finder and electronic shutter are working fine on the camera. Advance works well and the shutter curtains are light tight. The lens is in excellent shape with scratch free glass and no fungus The CF24 case has some scuffs and wear. Snaps still hold well. The instruction manual for the camera is in excellent shape. The 80mm manual has wear and is in good condition. An original promotional brochure on the F3AF is also included. It has wear and creasing and some writing on the back.
