Framed First Day Cover print LNER A1 Class 4476 Royal Lancer by Stuart Black When Nigel Gresley designed what became the London North Eastern Railway’s (LNER) class A1 locomotive, it was for hauling heavy express trains with power to spare. By 1928, with good marketing and some modifications, an A1 would pull the “Flying Scotsman” non-stop to Edinburgh. They could also handle any LNER express train including runs from London (King’s Cross) to Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle. No. 4476 “Royal Lancer”, built in 1923 and named after the winning horse in the 1922 St. Leger, was the seventh of the A1s, and lasted 40 years in main-line service. Its sister engine No. 4472 “Flying Scotsman”, named after the express in 1924, is preserved at the National Railway Museum, York. This First Day Cover print was issued by the Royal Mail on the 16th. September 2010. It is framed in an A4 (30 x 21 cm, 12 x 8.3 inch) size frame. Comes in a traditional style frame with a black border which can be used free standing or hung on a wall. Also included is a 14.8 x 10.5 cm (5.8 x 4.1 inch) postcard showing the LNER A1 Class stamp design. The pictures do NOT have the “SAMPLE” watermark!!
