The eldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. RARE 1942 Handwritten Letter to Jos. W Wall, with original 1942 postdated envelope. ******** The “James Roosevelt” collection offers a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century America, spanning the 1920s through letters penned by James Roosevelt, eldest son of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. This rich archive includes personal correspondence with his mother and father, as well as his grandmother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, highlighting the close, yet sometimes complicated dynamics within this prominent family. James’s letters capture an era marked by his father’s burgeoning political career and offer an intimate view of his own ambitions. Alongside family letters, the collection features exchanges with business associates that reveal James’s evolving role in financial and entrepreneurial spheres during a time of great economic change. Intriguingly, some letters also touch on his connections to Hollywood, as James maintained a notable presence in the entertainment industry, bridging worlds of politics, business, and cinema. Many letters in the collection tell a story, capturing the complexities of a Roosevelt and the correspondence of those who were close. Much of the correspondence was between Joseph Wall and James due to their long-term business involvement with “Roosevelt & Sargent”: Roosevelt began working for the insurance firm of Victor De Gerard of Boston, and remained with its successors until founding Roosevelt & Sargent, Inc. While serving as president of Roosevelt & Sargent, Roosevelt received a commission as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps., and accompanied his father, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to the Inter-American Conference in Buenos Aires as a military aide later that year. On January 1, 1937, Roosevelt resigned from Roosevelt & Sargent, and subsequently served as an administrative assistant, and later, secretary to his father until November 1938. In June 1946, Roosevelt returned to Roosevelt & Sargent, Inc. as executive vice president and established the firm’s office in Los Angeles. After relocating to California, Roosevelt also made a return to politics. In July 1946, he became chairman of the California State Democratic Central Committee. In 1950.I acquired this collection from the Profiles in History Auction House years ago. ********** James Roosevelt II (December 23, 1907 – August 13, 1991) was an American businessman, Marine, activist, and Democratic Party politician. The eldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, he served as an official Secretary to the President for his father and was later elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California, serving 5 terms from 1955 to 1965. He received the Navy Cross while serving as a Marine Corps officer during World War II. Lot includes: (1) 1942 Handwritten Letter from James Roosevelt to Joseph W.
