DESCRIPTION: This is a Semi-Antique Lost Wax Cast Bronze Altar Figure of a Man on Horseback. From what I could gather, the history of the cast Bronze Equestrian Figures, (which date back to at least the 17th Century in the Benin Kingdom), has been obscured over time, and there are multiple theories about who and what these represent. Some believe the horse rider is The King or Benin Oba, or a defeated King or Warrior from another Culture, and could celebrate a great Victory in battle. Or, perhaps the rider commemorates Prince Oranmiyon, from a neighboring Kingdom who both founded the Royal Lineage, and brought Horses to the New Kingdom. I can believe that the horse was unfamiliar to the sculptors as I have noticed a wide variety of the strangest looking horses ever-(especially in the early castings) from Wart-hog-like to Goat-like! I have owned this for over 30 years, and it was called “Antique” when I bought it. But I Collect based on the Beauty and Quality of a piece, the Patina, and if it follows “traditional” style, more than what someone tells me. Most important, I think, is that it is a Beautiful and Artistic Traditional Bronze, with very nice details, and should give you much enjoyment. Oba means Ruler in the Yoruba and Bini languages of West Africa. Yorubaland is a region that encompasses modern day Republics of Benin, Nigeria, and Togo. The figures were traditionally placed on home Altars, and have been produced in a similar way, using the Lost Wax method of casting Bronze, for the past 400 years. The Lost Wax process involves making the object out of wax, including using fine wax threading for detail, then very carefully enclosing it with special clay. When the clay shell hardens the form is then heated and the wax flows out through holes. The metal- typically bronze or a mixture of alloys is then poured into the mold. Each piece is made individually, and the mold cannot be reused. Therefore each casting is unique, and each piece must be judged on it’s own merit. SIZE: ~13″ Tall X ~9″ deep: nose to tail. Base is ~4.25″ across front X ~7.25″ deep. Weight = 6 Lbs, 11.8 Oz. CONDITION: Very Good Semi-Antique Condition with no damage noted. Will have some surface scratching from Age, Trade and Travel, and probably some dirt. There are a few sprue spots here and there I expect from casting. The limbs and appendages are intact and look good. Nice detail and Patina.
