Item DetailsOriginal pastel landscape painting by listed artist August Friedrich Kellner (German, 1885 – 1970).Framed and matted under glass.August Friedrich Kellner was a social democrat who opposed the Nazi regime and wrote a secret diary, titled “My opposition.” Kellner’s diary is considered a valuable historical document and a testimony of moral courage. Scene is of a Bavarian landscape, with a chateau nestled within a forest of trees. The treetops near the building are a lavender color. A figure walks along a trail, in the lower portion of the scene.Signed in the lower left. Painting measures: 9 ¾” x 12 ½”. Is attached to the mat with tape. (Can be removed with care.) The mat is a cream color and shows a small amount of water staining along the bottom edge. Cardboard backing has an Einrahmungen Gallery stamp on the verso. The gallery is based in Regensburg, Germany.Displayed in its original, ready to hang frame. Shows some scrapes along the edges. (See pic.) He was a German mid-level official and diarist who worked as a justice inspector in Laubach from 1933 to 1945. He was also a social democrat who opposed the Nazi regime and wrote a secret diary to record his observations and criticisms of the Nazi crimes. He titled his work Mein Widerstand, meaning “My Opposition”1. He gave his diary to his grandson, Robert Scott Kellner, who translated it into English and published it in 2018.
