For most, though, it was still about having fun and connecting with their favorite players and teams, with little regard for the financial value of the cards themselves. Today, there are many valuable 1970s baseball cards, including a large selection of Hall of Famer rookie cards. Among the many Hall of Famers who made their cardboard debuts during the 1970s are Ozzie Smith, Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Robin Yount, Carlton Fisk, Dennis Eckersley, Dave Winfield and Paul Molitor.In addition to the abundance of key rookie cards, condition is also a factor in determining value. Some sets hold up better than others. And then there’s 1971 Topps – easily one of the most condition sensitive sets in the history of the hobby. Although the black borders look great, they don’t hold up well. This has led to big premiums for cards that have sharp corners and edges. Another factor which contributes to the value of 1970’s baseball cards is that up until 1974, Topps issued several different series over the course of a season. The set size represents a significant increase in the total number of cards from those of previous years. Key rookie cards in the set include Eddie Murray (#36) and Paul Molitor (#707) who shares his card with another notable rookie in the form of Alan Trammell. Other notable rookie cards included in the set are Jack Morris (#703), Lou Whitaker (#704) and Lance Parrish (#708). The set also boasts cards from over 20 Hall of Fame players including three from Yankees slugger, Reggie Jackson.SubsetsThe 1978 Topps Baseball card set includes the following subsets within the master base set:Record Breakers (#1-7)League Leaders (#201-208)Playoff and World Series highlights (#276-277)Rookie stars (#701-711)DesignThe design of the 1978 Topps Baseball card set is one of the most subdued of the decade. Relying heavily on the photography rather than color and design elements, the overall design allows the card’s story to be told strictly through the player images which dominate the available geography of the cardboard canvas. A bold cursive-like script in the bottom left hand corner displays the team nickname of the depicted player, with their name designated in the area outside the color border which houses the image. A small baseball in the upper right-hand corner lists the player’s fielding position.The rest of the card’s story is told on the reverse which contains a wealth of information. A detailed listing of biographical and statistical information is accompanied by a brief trivia piece about the player. Using an orange and blue color scheme, the card backs are instantly identifiable compared to those from previous years in the decade.
