COVER: The 1912 Pope by Jesse Alexander. The Triumph motorcycle, like manyof its other British brothers, had itsbeginnings in the bicycle industry. Foundedin 1885 in London, the early history ofthe Triumph Company is very nearly lostin the mists of time.The founder of the company was, sur-prisingly, not an Englishman, but rather aGerman by the name of Siegfried Bett-mann. Bettmann’s small bicycle manufac-turing business prospered, and in 1887 hewas joined by a fellow German, M. J.Shulte, who was a young design engineer.Together, these two Germans were later tohave a profound effect on the infantmotorcycle industry.In 1888 the company moved to newquarters in Coventry, and in 1897 thebrilliant Shulte was investigating the pos-sibilities of a motor-powered bicycle. Themotor-bicycle under examination was theHildebrand and Wolfmuller, a Germanmachine which Shulte regarded as beingfar too crude to ever be a workable design.The seeds of a motor-powered bicycle weresown in Shulte’s mind, though, and he wasconvinced that the future held great thingsfor a motorbike.It was in 1902 that the first motorcyclewas produced by the burgeoning com-pany, when a Belgian Minerva single-cyl-inder engine was mounted on one of theirbicycles. The original 66mm bore by70mm stroke engine had an automatic in-let valve, battery-coil ignition, and it wasmounted below the front downtube of thebicycle. For 1903 the engine was modifiedto standard side-valve design, and in 1904the Triumph had a British J.A. Prestwichengine which was similar to the BelgianMinerva powerplant. The factory also pro-duced a model that year with a larger3 hp Belgian-made Fafnir engine mountedcentrally in the frame. All these earlyTriumphs had belt drive and bicycle pedal-gear with a single rim-brake.Despite the early enthusiasm for themotorbike, the public had found it lack-ing in reliability and overall performance.With this in mind, the brilliant Shulte de- |signed the very first all-British motorcyclein 1904 and production began the follow-ing year. The engine was a 3 hp single-cylinder side-valve, centrally mounted in aproperly designed motorcycle frame. Igni-tion was by a’ reliable magneto, and thecarburetor was of their own design.To publicize this first all-British machinethe company staged a demonstration runto prove its endurance. The goal was tocover 200 miles per day for six days — areally arduous test for machines of thatera. The run was a success, and the newTriumph was on its way to tremendouspopularity.Production in 1905 was at the astound-ing rate of five machines per week, whichrose to a healthy 500 machines for 1906.It was in 1906 that a front fork with a sus-pension spring was introduced, which madefor a more comfortable ride. In 1907 theengine dimensions were enlarged to 82mmx 86mm and production increased to 1000machines per year. In 1908 the enginewas again increased to 85mm x 88mm,which made it a full 500cc; and in 1909the production was up to 3000 units.During those very early days Triumphbecame renowned on the race courses,and their trusty little singles achievedmany victories. In the very first Isle ofMan TT race, for instance, the marquegarnered second and third places in thesingle-cylinder class. In 1908, Jack Mar-shall copped first place at 40.4 mph witha fastest lap at 42.48 mph. Other Triumphstook third, fourth and fifth places. Themodels featured direct belt drive at aratio of 4.5 to 1.A clutch in the rear hub was introducedin the 1911 models along with such nicetiesas adjustable tappets to set valve clear-ances. In 1913 a three-speed Sturmey-Archer hub gear was available, and a225cc two-stroke was also added to therange. The company experimented witha side-valve vertical-twin engine, too, butit never did reach the production stage.This last item was a hint of what was tocome in later years.For 1914 the bore and stroke dimensions… And much more!
