First Soldier Killed in the Civil War Click images to enlarge Description Up for Consideration is a Rare Original Hand Colored 1861 Currier Lithograph Print: COL. ELMER E. ELLSWORTH, NY. “First Soldier Killed in the Civil War” Scarce vibrant hand colored Currier & Ives Lithograph of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth First Soldier Killed in the Civil War & First Union “Martyr” c. 1861 Civil War Period, Currier & Ives Print: “COL. ELMER E. ELLSWORTH,” New York, 11×15, untrimmed, scattered soling and areas of staining. Rare. An original large size Print by Currier & Ives, measuring about 11” x 15”. This beautiful print is of the famous Civil War hero, Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth. He was an associate and friend to Abraham Lincoln, becoming the first Union soldier killed in the U.S. Civil War, who was assassinated at the Capture of Alexandria,Virginia on May 24th, 1861. The print was cut vertically through his left arm and expertly repaired with acid free archival tape. Identification and informational text printed below the image in black text. A very beautiful, impressive and rare print that has great overall eye appeal and is ready to frame for display. Scarce. Before the American Civil War, Ellsworth was famous for organizing the Chicago Zouaves and staging spectacular drill exhibitions throughout the country. He was appointed a major on the staff of General Swift of the Illinois National Guard, and later colonel and assistant-general; his company was appointed the Governor’s guards. In 1860, he entered the law office of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield as a law student, but spent much of his time on the presidential campaign. He accompanied Lincoln to Washington for the inauguration. When the Civil War began, he went to New York and raised the Fire Zouaves (11th New York). The regiment was one of the first “three years” regiments of the war. Ellsworth was killed by James T. Jackson, proprietor of the Marshall House Tavern in Alexandria, Va. on May 24, 1861, after removing a Confederate flag from the roof of that building; then Jackson was killed on the spot by Private F.E. Brownell. A New York Tribune correspondent was on the scene and reported the event, which did much to arouse war sentiment in the North. Ellsworth thus became the first “Martyr” for the Union.
